Mega Evolution Pokémon TCG Expansion Arrives September 26, 2025
The Pokémon Trading Card Game will introduce a major expansion on September 26, 2025, titled Mega Evolution. This new set brings significant gameplay additions, including the return of Mega Evolution mechanics in the form of Mega Evolution Pokémon ex.
Expansion Overview
The Mega Evolution expansion includes:
- Over 180 total cards
- Nearly a dozen Mega Evolution Pokémon ex
- More than 15 new Trainer cards
- Over 50 Pokémon and Trainer cards featuring special illustrations
Mega Venasaur ex and Mega Latias ex
This set is Standard legal, meaning all cards in this expansion can be used in official Standard format decks upon release.
Mega Evolution Pokémon ex
At the core of this expansion are Mega Evolution Pokémon ex—powerful evolutions that dramatically boost a Pokémon’s stats, especially HP and attack power. These cards are designed to offer strong offensive capabilities, but they also come with inherent risk, requiring careful deck construction and turn-by-turn decision-making.
Examples include:
- Mega Lucario ex, emphasizing fast, high-impact attacks backed by aura-based abilities.
- Mega Gardevoir ex, focusing on control and energy manipulation, suited for more strategic playstyles.
Players will need to weigh the benefits of high-risk, high-reward tactics when building around these cards.
Trainer and Illustration Cards
The set also introduces over 15 new Trainer cards, which offer new ways to support Mega Evolution strategies or counter them. In addition, more than 50 cards in the expansion will feature special illustrations, enhancing collectability and visual appeal.
These full-art and alternate-art cards include both Pokémon and Trainers, aimed at collectors and fans of unique artwork.
Legal and Competitive Play
All cards in the Mega Evolution expansion will be eligible for use in the Standard format, aligning with the TCG's latest rotation. This ensures that players looking to compete in ranked events or official tournaments can incorporate these cards into their decks immediately.
