Ken Sugimori: The Artist Who Defined Pokémon

When you think of Pokemon, chances are you're picturing creatures like Charizard, Bulbasaur, or Pikachu — all drawn in a now-iconic art style. That style exists thanks to one man: Ken

He's not just an artist — he’s the artist.

Ken Sugimori

Ken Sugimori, the Artist Behind Pokémon

He is the original character designer behind the first generation of Pokemon. A founding member of Game Freak, he went from drawing manga in the '80s to designing a franchise that would capture the hearts of millions.

He hand-drew the original 151 , setting the artistic tone for the entire series. From Pidgey to Mewtwo, Sugimori was the visionary behind their look, feel, and personality.

Sugimori’s Signature Style

Sugimori’s early artwork is easily recognizable:

  • Clean lines
  • Soft watercolors
  • Balanced poses (simple but expressive)
  • Designs that feel natural, like creatures you might actually find in a forest or sea

This aesthetic helped the company feel grounded, even magical — more like real animals than cartoon mascots.

Beyond the Cards: His Legacy

Sugimori led art direction for many generations of games (from Gen I through Gen VI), and influenced the design of hundreds of drawings.

He’s also known for:

  • Designing gym leaders and trainers
  • Overseeing the Pokédex art
  • Bringing in and mentoring new artists like James Turner and Hironobu Yoshida

His work laid the foundation that newer illustrators continue to build upon.
